    The Effectiveness of the Science Experimental Guidebook on the Conceptual Understanding of Students with Learning Disabilities

    This study aimed to develop a science experiments guidebook (based on discussion method and enriched worksheet) for fourth grade mainstreamed students with learning disabilities and to investigate its effect on their conceptual understanding of the "Matter and its Nature", "Living Things and Life", "Physical Events" and "Earth and The Universe" learning domains. Furthermore, mixtures, sieving, filtration, magnetism (Matter and its Nature), recycling (Living Things and Life), simple electrical circuit (Physical Events), and fossil (Earth and The Universe) concepts/issues were determined. Since the aim is to investigate the conceptual understanding of five 4th grade students with learning disabilities, the case study method was used. Conceptual understanding tests, drawing tests, and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection tools. The science experiments guidebook was presented to the students in worksheet format. Besides, worksheets were enriched with avatar images, mobile applications (QR codes), hands-on experiments, and active learning techniques (brainstorming, buzz 22, aquarium, and snowball). As a result of the research, it can be said that the science experiments guidebook had a positive effect on the conceptual understanding of students with learning disabilities

    Teachers’ Problems and Misconceptions Relate to “Solar System And Beyond: Space Puzzle” Unit: A Case Study Research

    The aim of this study was to emerge science and technology teachers problems and misconceptions relate to “The Solar System and Beyond: Space Puzzle” Unit. Case study research method was used in this study. The sample of the study consisted of 10 science and technology teachers. Semi structured interview question and observation form were used in the data collection process. Semi structured interview conducted with 10 science and technology teachers. Observation study was done in 2 science and technology teachers’ class. These observations take 14 hours. At the end of the study; it was found that teachers faced problems to attract students’ attention to the unit. Also half of the teachers faced difficulty to answer students’ problems because of the insufficient content knowledge. Textbook including misconception relate to planet orbits can led to teachers’ misconceptionsBu çalışmanın amacı; “Güneş Sistemi ve Ötesi: Uzay Bilmecesi” ünitesi kapsamında fen ve teknoloji öğretmenlerinin karşılaşmış oldukları problemleri tespit ederek sahip oldukları kavram yanılgılarını açığa çıkarmaktır. Çalışmada özel durum yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklem grubunu 10 fen ve teknoloji öğretmeni oluşturmuştur. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak; yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat sorusu ve gözlemlerden faydalanılmıştır. Örneklem grubunda bulunan öğretmenlerin 10’u ile mülakat yapılmış içlerinden seçilen 2 fen ve teknoloji öğretmeninin sınıfında gözlem çalışmaları yürütülmüştür. Araştırma sonucunda; öğretmenlerin büyük çoğunluğunun ünitenin son ünite olması ve havaların ısınması ile birlikte öğrencilerin dikkatini konuya çekmede problem yaşadıkları tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca öğretmenlerin yarısının ünite ile ilgili kapsamlı bilgi sahibi olmadıklarından öğrenci sorularını yanıtlamada kendilerini yetersiz hissettikleri belirlenmiştir. Yapılan gözlemler sonucunda her iki öğretmenin güneş sisteminde yer alan gezegenlerin yörüngelerinin şeklinin daire şeklinde olduğu kavram yanılgısına sahip oldukları ve bu yanılgılarının kaynağının ders kitabından kaynaklanabileceği düşüncesine ulaşılmıştır

    THE EFFECT OF FIRE CONTEXT ON THE CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF STUDENTS: “THE HEAT-TEMPERATURE”

    The purpose of this research is to investigate effects of the guiding materials developed based on the REACT teaching model relate to “heat-temperature” concepts in the conceptual understanding of students. The sample group of the study consists of 5th grade students selected from elementary school. A total of 56 (experiment group 27, control group 29) students from two classes have participated in the study. A quasi-experimental method has been used in this study. Experiment and control groups’ obtained test scores are measured before and after the intervention and these results are compared with each other. A concept test, an interview consisting of semi-structured questions and a drawing test, have been utilised in the research. While no significant difference (U=373.5; p>.05) has been found between the pre-test scores of the control group and experiment group students, a significant difference (U= 271.5; p<.05) has been found in favour of the experiment group in the post test. The materials prepared in accordance with the “The fire context” which was applied in the experiment group had positive effect in students’ conceptual understanding.   Article visualizations

    Investigation the effects of learning environment enriched with 5E Model on students’ achievement

    Bu çalışmanın amacı; ilköğretim 7. sınıf “Güneş Sistemi ve Ötesi: Uzay Bilmecesi” ünitesi kapsamında 5E öğretim modeline uygun geliştirilen rehber materyallerin, öğrencilerin akademik başarıları üzerine olan etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmada yarı deneysel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklem grubunu Trabzon Mimar Sinan İlköğretim okulundan 72 ilköğretim 7. sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Başarı testinin KR-20 güvenirlik katsayısı 0.86 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Deney ve kontrol gruplarının kendi içlerinde karşılaştırılmaları bağımlı t-testi, gruplar arasındaki karşılaştırmalar bağımsız t-testi kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Rehber materyalin kalıcılık üzerine olan etkisi başarı testinin ön-son -geciktirilmiş test puanlarına uygulanan F testi (ANOVA) ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda deney ve kontrol gruplarının göstermiş oldukları başarılar arasında deney grubu lehine anlamlı bir farklılığın olduğu (t(70)= 4,345; p<.05) tespit edilmiştir.The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the enriched 5E model on students’ academic achievement relate to “Solar System and Beyond: Space Riddle” unit. A quasi-experimental research method was used in this study. The sample of this study is composed of 72 grade 7 students at Trabzon Mimar Sinan Primary school. Achievement test’s KR-20 reliability coefficient was calculated as 0.86. Dependent t-test was used in to group comparisons and in-depended t-test was used comparisons between groups. Students’ achievement test scores of the pre-testpost-test and delayed test were analyzed with F-test (ANOVA). At the end of the study; it was found out that there was a significant difference (t(70)= 4,345; p<.05) on students’ academic achievement in favor of experiment group compared with the control group

    The Impact of Guiding Materials on Students’ Conceptual Understanding: The Case of "What Is the Earth's Crust Composed of?"

    The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the use of guidance material based on the 5E model on students’ conceptual understanding of a topic entitled "What is the earth’s crust composed of?”. The sample consists of 40 students from the 5th grade (experimental group 20, control group 20). A concept test, a drawing test, and semi-structured interview questions were used for data collection. In the experiment group, guidance material prepared according to the 5E model was used; the control group was conducted using the existing textbook. Student responses were examined in terms of the following categories: complete understanding, partial understanding, alternative concept, no response or irrelevant responses. The quantitative data obtained from the experimental and the control groups were compared by using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Content analysis was used to analyze students’ drawings. In conclusion, it was determined that the guidance materials developed according to 5E model have a positive effect (U=76.00, p<.05) on students' conceptual understanding about the topic entitled "What is the earth’s crust composed of?”

    The Effect of Enriched Learning Environments on the Conceptual Understanding of Students: “The Erosion and Landslide”

    The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of enriched learning environments which have been developed in the framework of the “erosion and landslide” concepts on the conceptual understanding of students. A quasi-experimental method has been used in this research. The sample consists of 40 students. 5th grade students (aged 11-12) selected from a primary school in the province of Trabzon in Turkey. To collect data, the researchers used concept test, interview consisting of semi-structured questions and drawing test. When the post test results are examined, a significant difference is identified in favour of the experiment group (U=128,00, p<.05). However, the fact that students were not able to reflect this result to their drawings is striking. In the post drawings made on the concepts of erosion and landslide, the number of students who did not make any drawings in the experiment and control groups is quite high. This result can be stem from student’s operational periods. 5th graders are in the process of transition from the concrete operational period to the abstract operational period. They had problems to reflect their thinking’s to drawings. Ready-made pictures were utilized in the poster assignment used in this research. A poster activity which includes the drawings of students can be carried out in a future research
